About NSA

What is Nashville School of the Arts?

Nashville School of the Arts is a public magnet high school (grades 9-12) for arts-interested students living within Metropolitan Nashville (Davidson County). Major arts areas include: dance, mass media, music, theatre, and visual art. Students are expected to both study in their respective arts and complete the same academic curriculum as all other Metro students. Students must audition, interview, or write an essay to be accepted into Nashville School of the Arts.

A Brief History

Nashville School of the Arts began as a small magnet program for arts-interested students within Pearl-Cohn High School in 1993. As time went on, NSA grew to a size warranting its own facility, which was achieved in 1996 on the former Cumberland School campus, under the direction of principal Robert Churchwell. In 1997, Mr. Churchill was succeeded by Dr. Elbert Ross.

The School of the Arts continued to grow as we gained assistant principal Mary Nollner in 2000, and executive principal ship changed hands to current principal Bob Wilson in 2001. In 2003, the school changed campuses to its present location at former Tennessee Preparatory School. Soon after, assistant principal Mary Nollner was given the interim executive principal position at Joelton Middle School. Lendozia Edwards became the new assistant principal of Nashville School of the Arts.  In 2005, Mrs. Edwards was given the executive principal position at Martin Luther King (MLK) Magnet High school.  Ms. Tonja Williams has succeeded her as NSA's assistant principal.

Nashville School of the Arts has a bright future ahead of it. Our location on the Tennessee Preparatory School campus is a temporary one until a facility can be built downtown, where students will be able to not only study and perform their arts on school grounds but also interact with the downtown arts community around them.

Mission, Vision & Beliefs

The mission of Nashville School of the Arts is to provide the highest quality instruction in the fine and performing arts while providing a challenging academic program for the talented and creative students in the public school community we serve.
