Counseling & Career Center

About the Counseling Center

NSA's Counseling and Career Center is available for students to use to help plan for their future. Our counselors are here to help our students throughout their high school career. The center has access to the internet for online college and scholarship searches. The Counseling Center is also where students can go to find ACT and SAT information, along with College Directories, College Catalogs, and college and financial aid videos, all of which can be checked out by students.

She began her work with Guidance at Dupont-Hadley Middle School before moving six years ago to the newly established Nashville School of the Arts. She enjoys working at a school with so many talented students. It is always something new and different at NSA. Mrs. West has always been interested in art and creating, whether it be ceramics, sewing, making birdhouses with her power tools, decorating her home for the holidays, or doing crafts with her three grandchildren.

Standardized Test Descriptions

ACT : The ACT is a college entrance examination. It assesses high school students' general educational development and their ability to complete college-level work. The multiple-choice tests cover four skill areas: English, mathematics, reading, and science. For more information about the test, visit www.act.org.

AP (Advanced Placement) Exams : Early May, 2006. At the conclusion of an AP course, students can take the corresponding AP exam. Most colleges and universities award credit for an AP course if the student performs well on the test, usually with a score of 3 or better. Fee: $82 (The fee is reimbursed if the student passes the test with a score of 3 or better. Test scores range from 1 to 5.) For more information about the test, visit www.collegeboard.com.

ASVAB : The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is a valuable tool in career exploration. The test is designed to help students match their interests and skills to over 400 civilian and military careers. Although the test is administered by a representative from the Armed Services, any junior can take the test, even if he/she does not intend to enlist in the military. There is no fee for the ASVAB, and sign up will start in January. For more information about the test, visit www.asvabprogram.com .

End of Course (EOC) Tests : Early May, students will take an End of Course test in the following subjects: Math Foundations II, English I, Physical Science, and US History. These are standardized tests taken by all students in the state of Tennessee . The score will count as 15% of the final semester grade for the course. The EOC does not take the place of a final exam.

Gateway Exams (Make ups and Retakes): For students who have previously failed a Gateway exam, or students who have completed a course in Algebra I, Biology, and/or English II at a private or out-of-state school and did not take the corresponding Gateway exam. See below for more information.

Gateway Exams : Students who are enrolled in Algebra I, English II, and Biology will take a Gateway exam at the conclusion of each course. Students must pass all three Gateway exams in order to graduate. If a student fails an exam, there are opportunities to retake the test.

PSAT : The PSAT is a practice SAT test. It is recommended for college-bound students in 10th and 11th grades. Students must sign up in guidance. The fee is $11.00, payable by check. Checks should be made out to Nashville School of the Arts. Please write the student's name on the check. For more information about the test, visit www.collegeboard.com .

PLAN : The PLAN is a practice ACT test administered to all 10 th grade students. There is no fee. For more information about the test, visit www.act.org

SAT : The SAT is a three-hour test that measures verbal and mathematical reasoning skills students have developed over time and skills they need to be successful in college. Many colleges and universities use the SAT as one indicator among others-class rank, high school GPA, extracurricular activities, personal essay, and teacher recommendations-of a student's readiness to do college-level work. Each section of the SAT is scored on a scale of 200-800. The SAT is typically taken by high school juniors and seniors. Starting with the March 2005 administration of the SAT, students will have to write an essay as part of the SAT. Changes will also be made to the Verbal and Math sections of the test. Please visit the website for details. www.collegeboard.com

TCAP Writing Assessment : This test is given to all juniors in Tennessee , in order to assess their writing skills. Juniors will be given a prompt, and they will write a short, persuasive essay in 25 minutes. This assessment will help students to prepare for the new writing section of the ACT and SAT.
