Students and parents are responsible for reading and adhering to NSA and Metro school policies in both the NSA Student Handbook, much of which is available on this website, and the Metro Schools Code of Conduct. These guidelines provide equal educational opportunities to ensure the success of all students. All parents and visitors are to report directly to the Main Office. No visitors will be allowed on school grounds without permission from the principal. Violation of this policy can result in criminal prosecution for trespassing. Each visitor is to sign in and receive a visitor's pass from the Main Office. Appointments to see the principal, assistant principal and guidance counselor may be made with the appropriate secretary. Detailed emergency plans in cases of fire, tornado, intruders, etc. are in place at NSA. All teachers are familiar with these procedures and will do everything possible to keep all NSA students safe. Parents who hear by radio or television of an emergency situation at NSA are encouraged to listen for further instructions. Please do not call the school for detailed information because the proper safety procedure will not permit the secretary to disclose any information until otherwise instructed by either the Executive Principal or the central office. A student may possess a cellular telephone in school, on school property, at after school activities and at school-related functions, provided that during school hours and on a school bus the cell phone remains off and must be concealed. Possession of a cellular telephone by a student is a privilege, which may be forfeited by any student who fails to abide by the terms of this policy. Violation of this policy may result in disciplinary action against the student which may result in confiscation of the cellular telephone. The student who possesses a cellular phone shall assume responsibility for its care. At no time shall Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools be responsible for preventing theft, loss or damage to cell phones brought onto its property. See Rule 1 - Disruption of School, in the MNPS Student Code of Conduct, for additional rules on other electronic devices. - Teachers have phones in classrooms; however, instructional time will not be interrupted by unnecessary outside phone calls. Please leave a message for the teacher to return your call. - A student may be permitted to use a phone with the teacher's permission only for emergencies. - If the student is ill, contact is to be made between the parent and discipline secretary to inform the parent of the student's illness. - Parents who must speak with students during the day should call the discipline office to explain the reason for classroom instruction interruption. No student is allowed to leave class, or teacher-sponsored activity without the teacher unless the student has been issued an official hall pass for his/her NSA agenda. Students discovered in the hallways without a legitimate pass will be punished. It is the responsibility of the student to make sure the teacher writes in his/her agenda. First period teachers assign lockers. Do not use another locker without checking with your first period teacher. Do not share lockers. Locks are the responsibility of the student. NSA is not responsible for lost articles when placed in lockers without locks. Lockers are subject to search in accordance with Board Policies and Tennessee law. Classroom locations will usually prevent you from going to lockers between each class. Plan your day according to room location and plan to carry books for more than one class. Do not ask to go to your locker during class time. At the end of each semester, a locker check will take place to clean out the lockers and to check for lost textbooks. At the end of first period, students will take all possessions from their locker and proceed to second/third period class. At the end of second/third period, students may return all possessions and secure them with their lock. The following information is based on Metro Board Policies. Refer also to the Code of Student Conduct booklet. The following rules and regulations apply to the use of the parking areas and driveways on the NSA campus. These rules are prepared for students in written form in order that the school's expectations of student drivers will be clear. The parking lot areas are considered to be a part of the school campus and all other rules and regulations governing school conduct that are stated in the NSA Code of Student Conduct and the Metropolitan Public School's Student Code of Conduct also apply to parking lot areas. - Students driving to school must be on time and abide by the speed limit of 10 miles per hour. - Students are to park only in the designated student lot next to the school building. No student may park in faculty spots in front of the building or in the handicapped spaces. - Bus loading lanes at the south end of the building, fire lanes on the circle at the front of the school, and access lanes surrounding parking lot areas are to be kept free of parked or standing vehicles at all times. - Students are not to be in the parking lot area during the regular school day without a note signed by a principal or without an early dismissal pass properly completed. - Drivers are advised to lock unattended vehicles since the school is not liable for loss of valuables from cars. Tapes, books, musical instruments, and other valuables should not be left in plain view in unattended vehicles. Such articles should be stored in the trunk of the car. - In the event of an accident on school grounds involving personal injury or property damage, the Metro Police Department should be notified by the student(s) involved in order to make an official report of the accident. This record may be requested by the insurer of the vehicle for purposes of arriving at settlement of the damages. - Dismissals - All times - Students are dismissed to go to the parking area only at the ringing of the afternoon dismissal bell. Vehicles are to exit the parking area in a single lane of traffic using the right lane and leaving the left lane clear to incoming traffic. - It is a privilege to drive your car on campus, and if rules are violated, driving privileges will be suspended by the principal. - Any student operating a vehicle on the school campus shall assume the responsibility for the conduct of all passengers in his/her vehicle. Loud music is not to be played on campus. No school official shall release a student to a person other than a known legal custodian unless the school official has either (1) the permission of a legal custodian, or (2) a valid, court-approved visitation order that includes permission for the non-custodian to pick up the student from school (Derived from T.C.A. 36-6-105). When permission has been obtained, the school official responsible for releasing the child must be satisfied that the person to whom the child is released is the person for whom permission was given. In the event of emergency circumstances, due to which the custodian's permission for release cannot be obtained, school officials should use extreme caution in determining the identity of any person to whom the child may be released. Information cards should be kept on file for each student in order to facilitate the implementation of Policy #5140. An "emergency" DOES NOT exist when a person presents himself/herself to school officials and declares that his/her visitation or custody arrangement requires that person to take physical custody of the child at school. If either legal custody or visitation arrangements have changed, the person attempting to take physical custody of the child (1) must present school officials a certified copy of a valid court order, and (2) must give school officials reasonable advance notice if the person intends to take physical custody of the child at school. The same documentation is required if a person is asserting existing custody or visitation arrangement if school officials have no record of it.
